About Slade Point
Slade Point is a coastal suburb and peninsula in the Mackay Region, approximately 8.7 kilometres north-north-east of Mackay CBD.
The suburb had a population of 3,450 people in the 2021 Census, increasing from 3,349 in 2016. It covers approximately 7.2 square kilometres, with the Coral Sea forming much of its northern and eastern boundary.

Lamberts Beach & Lookout
Lamberts Lookout provides sweeping views along the Mackay coastline and across the Coral Sea. During whale migration season, humpback whales can sometimes be seen travelling along the coast.
Slade Point Reserve
Approximately 73 hectares of coastal dunes, paperbark wetlands and natural habitat are protected in Slade Point Reserve, with walking tracks through the coastal landscape.
Water Tower Mural
The local water tower features a large mural of whales and red-tailed black cockatoos by artists Scott Nagy and Cara Sanders, making it one of Slade Point’s most recognisable landmarks.
Cathy Freeman
Slade Point is the birthplace of Australian Olympic champion Cathy Freeman. A local recreation area where she raced as a child was later named in her honour.
A Little Slade Point History
Lieutenant James Cook named Slade Point in June 1770 during the voyage of HMS Endeavour, honouring Thomas Slade, Surveyor of the Royal Navy and naval architect of HMS Victory.
The settlement was originally known as Amhurst before officially becoming Slade Point on 1 January 1967. Slade Point State School opened as Amhurst State School in 1939 and was renamed in 1967.
