Six kilometres of Mackay coastline
Blacks Beach is one of Mackay’s best-known northern beaches, about 15 minutes north of the city centre. Its long shoreline, coastal homes and family-friendly lifestyle make it a distinctive part of the Mackay region.
The suburb had a population of 4,153 people in the 2021 Census, up from 3,861 in 2016.
Blacks Beach stretches for around six kilometres along Mackay’s Northern Beaches and is the longest continuous beach in the region. The shoreline is popular for beach walks, swimming, watersports and relaxed family days by the water.
From Sugar Plantation to Coastal Suburb
Blacks Beach takes its name from Maurice Hume Black, who operated The Cedars sugar plantation and mill from 1871. The mill closed in 1885, after which the plantation’s cane was crushed at the River Estate sugar mill.
Black originally lived on the plantation before later moving to the coast. Today the suburb that carries his name is one of Mackay’s established northern beach communities.

Local parks include Blacks Beach Park, Botha Street Park, Carbeen Street Park, Corella Way Park, Emperor Drive Park, McLaughlin Drive Park, Narrabeen Street and Newport Parade Park.
Mackay Regional Council also operates a mobile library service on a fortnightly schedule at Blacks Beach Road.
